We are back from the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games and we had a blast! Time flew while we were out in California and so many awesome memories were made. Before the Games, our love for CrossFit was pretty big and apparent. Well now it's even even more so. I can't say it enough how amazing the CrossFit community is. The amount of love for this growing sport is unbelievable and we are so grateful for the unforgettable experience we had at this year's Games.
After volunteering at the North East Regionals, we knew right away we wanted to volunteer at the Games, even if it meant the entire cost of the trip was out of our own pocket. After getting confirmation that we were selected to be volunteers, we booked our airfare, hotel and rental car. The countdown was on and we couldn't wait to get out to the west coast!
Here's how our experience went down!
Wednesday morning came and we were on our way to the airport, but not without first stopping for some Taylor ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches (It's a NJ thing). After shoveling them down, we were ready for take-off.
The moment we landed, we checked our emails and had one from our team leader Jason asking if anyone was around later that day to help out with the Overhead Squat Event. Without any hesitation we said YES and were on our way to the hotel to drop off our luggage and head on over to the StubHub Center. But first...
We had to make a pit-stop for lunch and while in Cali, you gotta have In-N-Out Burger! After some burgers, fries and milkshakes, it was time to work. Two days later we returned with some of our new friends and this time went with animal style.
After arriving at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, we checked in at staff services and picked up some of our free goodies. Among the items were some staff shirts, yellow Reebok sneakers, a customized RX Smart Gear jump rope, two silver passes to the Games and a fun name tag. The following day we received more stuff such as a Reebok backpack, snapback hat, Junk brand headband, $50 gift card to Pure Pharma, Reebok portable phone charger, WOD book, Rogue bottle opener and more.
The StubHub Center was the home to the Fittest on Earth for the weekend. It's also the home to Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy and has hosted events such as the MLS All-Star Game, MLS Cup Game and the FIFA Women's World Cup championship match to name a few.
It was time to meet our group we would be working with for the next several days. We were assigned to the equipment and gear team at the tennis stadium (aka black tie affair). This awesome team consisted of guys and gals from all over the US, UK and one from Austria! Also on our team was a North East Regionals athlete. We all got along great and ended up spending most of our free time together as well, whether it be trips to In-N-Out, the hotel lobby bar after a long day's work, the CrossFit Games after party, or spending the day in Santa Monica at the beach and pier (Check out our Instagram hashtag #cfgtenniscrew for some cool shots).
In between setting up for the events and wheeling barbells on and off the stadium floor between heats, we got to spend a lot of time hanging out in the tunnel leading out to the stadium. It was pretty awesome seeing the athletes warm up, chit chat and even talk and take pictures with us volunteers.
This place was GREAT! From the huge Reebok and Rogue tents to the Beer Garden to the Expo Stage to food vendors, this place had everything you could want. Volunteers received 25% off at Reebok so of course we had to buy some new gear. The Rogue tent did custom screen print t-shirts, there were tons of free stuff given out at FitAID and Quest Bar booths, meet and greets with some awesome athletes/coaches and the list goes on. If you weren't watching an event at the soccer or tennis stadium, this sure was the place to be.
Being in such close proximity to your favorite CrossFit athletes was pretty freaking cool. It took me two days to have the guts to say hi to Dan Bailey. Not only was he as nice as I had expected, he also gave me a great, sweaty hug. Too bad LR can't say the same. She chickened out when it came to James Hobart.
Thanks to Rogue, the CrossFit Games had the BEST equipment possible! Us volunteers spent a lot of time with their stuff, loading up barbells, wheeling them on and off the stadium, repositioning them in between all the heats, etc. Their products are by far the greatest out there.
One of the biggest names in the CrossFit Games is THE Dave Castro, the man responsible for it all. He was a pleasure to meet at Regionals and just as nice this time around. We kind of like his hair better long.
Although we were only in Cali for less than a week, we managed to make some new friends. The amount of time we all spent with one another within that week was priceless. We met some of the greatest people and hopefully will stay in touch and volunteer together again next year at the CrossFit Games!
