We are rapidly approaching the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games in Carson, California at the StubHub Center! As you probably know, Fitness Cult Chronicles’ Ali and LR will be heading to the west coast to help out on the Rogue Equipment and Gear Team so make sure you are following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for live updates throughout the Games!
This year we will be seeing some new faces compete against well-known veteran athletes, as there were a few major upsets at Regionals. One person we won’t be seeing at the Games is Samantha Briggs, 2013’s Fittest Woman on Earth, who missed a podium finish by six points. On a more positive note, two-time champion Annie Thorisdottir will be back this year after missing the 2013 games due to an injury. She took the top spot at the Europe Regionals and is in a solid position to make a run at a third CrossFit Games title.
Central East Region
This region has some new faces we are really looking forward to seeing in Carson! Will Moorad will be competing at the Games for the 1st time this year (he finished 11th at the Central East Regionals in 2013). Finishing on the podium next to Rich Froning and Scott Panchik is a pretty big deal and shows that he means business. This former soccer player also managed to beat out past Games athletes such as Graham Holmberg (2010 Games champion) and Marcus Hendren. We have a feeling we’ll be hearing Moorad’s name quite a bit at the Games! Also another newbie Games qualifier from the Central East is Nicole Holcomb. This was her 3rd trip to Regionals (past finishes included 6th in 2013 and 12th in 2012) and she finished 2nd place overall between Julie Foucher (who is making a comeback this year after taking 2013 off) and Games vet Michelle Kinney.
North Central Region
The North Central Region is stacked with talent this year. Alexandra LaChance is someone to watch out for at the StubHub Center. She started CrossFit in January 2013, placed 39th in the Open that year and decided to compete on a team instead of going individual. This first-time Games competitor finished 1st place in her region right above Elisabeth Akinwale and Kelley Jackson. We will certainly miss seeing Stacie Tovar competing at the Games this year. She took a 6th place finish at the North Central Regionals, missing the podium by six points.
North East Region
We might be a little biased, but the North East had a TON of great athletes at their Regionals who are moving onto the Games. Not only does this region have some of the best talent around but they also had two athletes set event records! Mathew Fraser beat out SoCal’s Josh Bridges fastest time in Event 3 (Nasty Girls V2) with a finish time of 6:58 and Sheila Barden beat out Canada East’s Camille Leblanc-Bazinet with a time of 6:54. Being at the North East Regionals and watching it live was incredible! These two were the talk of the weekend and proved why they are good enough to make it to the CrossFit Games. Fraser (who finished 5th in the 2013 Regionals) took 1st place, James Hobart (three-time Games competitor on a team will be making his first appearance as an individual) took 2nd and Craig Kenney (who finished 7th in the 2013 Regionals) took 3rd, all have what it takes to give the Games vets some great competition.
Unfortunately we won’t be seeing past Games athletes Austin Malleolo or Kaleena Ladeairous this year but we are really excited to see Barden give it all she has. With a 24th place Regionals finish in 2012 and a 10th place finish in 2013, she came back this year and took 2nd place! As for Fraser, we have a feeling all eyes are going to be on him this year. Besides for setting a record in Event 3, he also had the 3rd highest overall worldwide score in Event 4 and the 2nd highest overall worldwide score in Event 7. With a 2nd highest overall Regionals score worldwide (Froning taking the top spot), we may just see him standing on that winner's podium!
South Central Region
There were some big surprises at the South Central Regionals this year. Jordan Cook, an Olympic weightlifter, just missed qualifying for the Regionals in 2013 by finishing 62nd in the Open. This year not only did he make it to Regionals, but he also took 1st place! Rounding out the podium are Jeff Germond who has competed in the Regionals since 2010 (finishes include 22nd, 13th, 8th, 8th and this year 2nd place) and Richard Bohlken taking 3rd place, a former pro baseball player who finished in 6th place at his first Regionals in 2013. Can't wait to see what these three new Games competitors have in store for us in Carson!
South East Region
The South East has some new faces making their way to Carson. 1st place finisher Emily Bridgers will be making her debut at the games along with Lauren Brooks who took 3rd. Bridgers finished 5th in 2013 and 4th in 2012. These two are definitely on our "Must Watch" list!
NorCal and SoCal Regions
There aren’t too many unfamiliar faces coming out of the Northern California or Southern California Regions but there were some upsets. A fan favorite, Garret Fisher finished 5th at the NorCal Regionals while his younger sister Lauren Fisher took 3rd place overall at the SoCal Regionals behind well-known Games athletes Valerie Voboril (2013’s 3rd place Games finisher) and Rebecca Voight (seven-time Games competitor). It was a huge upset for Lindsey Valenzuela who finished 4th at Regionals and was also the 2nd place finisher at last year’s Games.
We are excited to see all our big-time, favorite athletes compete in a few weeks but also can’t wait to see what these first-time Games athletes bring to the table! I’m thinking we will see some new faces on the winner’s podium this year!
