So you just joined your local CrossFit Box and completed your fundamentals classes? Congratulations and welcome to the cult! While it's pretty exciting to start attending regular classes, it can also be confusing. One thing that most CrossFitters struggle with when they are starting is what they should have in their gym bags. From callus shavers, to tape to the right kind of shoes we had to learn what was worth having by trial and error. You'll have to try a bunch of things out to see what you like (that's half the fun!), but this little primer on gym bag essentials should give you a head start. You don't want to be that guy who's constantly bumming gym supplies off people.
Always have some of this handy. Between holding onto the barbell or the rig, your hands will most likely take a beating. Athletic tape can fix that and your hands will thank you! You can find it in your local grocery store or pharmacy for about $1.99 a roll.
Wrist Wraps are a staple piece to always have with you when CrossFitting. They are not only supportive and helpful during heavy barbell movements, but they can also offer great support during movements such as handstand push-ups and wall balls. Some of our favorite brands are Rogue, RedLine Gear and WODshop. You can find a good pair for around $10-12.
A good pair of sneakers is key when doing CrossFit. Our personal favorites are all of the Reebok CrossFit Nano’s (2.0’s, 3.0’s and the latest 4.0’s). Another brand that is very popular with the CrossFit community is Inov-8. If you are lucky and have tiny feet like Ali, you can save some money and buy them in the youth sizes. We highly recommend investing in any pair of these as you will be spending a lot of time in them! Reebok CrossFit Nano 3.0’s are currently on sale for $99 and Inov-8’s for $85.
*mini disclaimer - we have an affiliate relationship with Reebok, but there are no affiliate links in this post.
A movement you will be doing, hearing and seeing a lot in CrossFit are called Double Unders. They aren’t easy and will need a lot of practice, but having a good jump rope will make all the difference. My personal favorite rope is the SR-1 Rogue Bearing Speed Rope. It only costs $22 and you will get a ton of use out of it. You can also adjust it to your personal height. Another favorite is the RX Jump Rope made by RX Smart Gear. Their ropes are custom sized to your height and come in a variety of fun colors. They cost $43.
KNEE HIGH SOCKS
Your shins will most certainly need a pair of knee high socks during some WODs. Whether you are doing box jumps, deadlifts or rope climbs, you will be glad you have these on. After some nasty falls and cuts while not wearing socks, I always keep a pair in my gym bag.
Functional First, Stylish Second
The items above will help you get the most out of the first few months of your CrossFit experience. We encourage you to try out different styles, brands and products until you find gear that is functional and helps express yourself. Above all though, you should try to find items that are durable and will help you get through a tough WOD.
Stay tuned for another Must-Have post for the intermediate to advanced CrossFitter!
