Seventeen regions and four weekends later, the CrossFit Regionals are complete! The best athletes and teams are now headed to the finals in Carson, California for the ultimate fitness showdown.
A few of us were fortunate enough to spend some time at the Reebok Corporate Headquarters in Canton, Massachusetts volunteering for the CrossFit North East Regionals. Reebok HQ might have been one of the coolest places I have ever seen! It was like we had all died and went to some crazy fitness heaven where Nanos took the place of halos.
Here is a countdown of the Top 10 perks to being a North East Regional volunteer:
10. Dropping In On New Boxes
Visiting a new place always means researching boxes in the area and dropping in for a WOD or two. You don’t even want to see the spreadsheet LR put together of box options. We take this stuff seriously! Despite our crazy volunteer schedule, we found the time to drop into two great boxes. On Friday after a day of volunteering, we dropped into Reebok CrossFit Bare Cove for an awesome WOD which just so happen to be Event 6! We followed up this great experience with a visit to CrossFit Home Base on Sunday morning. Maybe LR's type-A Box spreadsheet was a little over the top, but it definitely helped that we did our research beforehand - these were two awesome facilities. (If you want to know more about these experiences, don’t worry, we will write about them in more detail very soon!)
9. Free Entry To Regionals (Nothing Cheaper Than Free)
As a volunteer, you get a free ticket to the regionals for each day. Before or after our shifts we were able to walk around the campus, shop till we dropped in vender village (or our wallets cried for mercy) and sit in the bleachers to watch all the athletes compete. Even if you weren't assigned a shift one day, you still had a free ticket to just watch and enjoy the events.
8. Behind The Scenes Access (Fitness VIP)
We had access to only places that staff and athletes were able to be in and could see all the athletes lined up before the start of their heats. We also had front row viewing for majority of the events.
7. Staff Tent (Budget Olympic City)
There was a staff tent where volunteers were able to grab cold waters and fresh meals throughout the day. The food was healthy, delicious, and there was tons of variety depending on your personal choices (vegetarian, paleo, vegan, etc.). A big thank you to Paleo Power Meals for the great food all weekend long. We like to think of this as a small Olympic City without all the sketchiness.
6. Face Time With The Athletes (Fitness Groupie Heaven)
Being so close to some of your favorite CrossFit athletes was like seeing your favorite Hollywood actor or actress up close. Unlike most actors though, these guys and gals were all super friendly and willing to spend time with everyone. Some came over on their own to thank the volunteers for all their hard work, which was above and beyond what we would ever have expected.
5. Nanos, Nanos And More Nanos
Some would say we have an addiction to Reebok CrossFit apparel. So it was pretty natural that seeing some of the athletes compete wearing the new Reebok CrossFit Nano 4.0's made us pretty damned jealous. Then came Sunday! The Reebok tent released them for sale! We were able to purchase them before anyone else. I guess that's a great perk of having the regionals at Reebok HQ! North East was the only regional to release the Nano 4.0's!
4. Playing With The Toys
We felt like kids at Disney World when we walked onto the event floor. From handstand walks to pull ups, it was like a grownup playground. Imagine throwing passes to your buddies on the field at halftime during the Super Bowl. If you're part of a fitness cult, this was pretty much the exact same thing (fine, maybe that's just a bit of a stretch).
3. Meeting The Top Brass (Kind Of a Big Deal)
Get to meet THE Dave Castro. If you CrossFit and don't know who he is, shame on you! Not only does he have great hair, he is super nice and was so appreciative of all the volunteers helping out. He was at the North East on Friday and took it upon himself to come around and greet all the volunteers as well as take pictures. While he watched the action from the media pit, he managed to fist bump all the equipment volunteers as they made their way off the floor after a successful transition. Next up on the need to meet list - Dan Bailey!
2. Going Rogue
Being on the Rogue equipment team. From barbells to wall balls, it was such a cool job to be able to help set up the equipment the athletes used during each event. It was also great to experience all the hard work and effort that is put into making the regionals run so smoothly.
1. A GREAT Experience With New & OLD Friends
It seems like every month we find ourselves getting more involved with this fitness movement. The North East Regionals were definitely the best CrossFit related event we have attended and we couldn't be any more pumped for the Finals in July. See you in Carson, California!
