Summer, Sand And SteelFit
CrossFit and the beach just happen to be two of our favorite things so what better way to spend a nice, little Saturday?! June 21st wasn’t just the official first day of summer, but it also happened to be the SteelFit Championships Finals on Jenkinsons Beach in Point Pleasant, NJ! SteelFit is a fitness competition that is only in its 2nd year and already has had such a tremendous turnout. This event not only tests your physical strength, but also your endurance and willpower. SteelFit also works with the Warrior Wellness Center, a group that provides health and wellness training to our nation’s warriors and their families. Proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales also went to selected charities.
The talent at this event was incredible. Some of these athletes had just competed at the CrossFit North East Regionals a few weeks back! It was also nice having a few friends and familiar faces to cheer on and watch compete. The 129 athletes from 60 different boxes across 4 states competing at this event had to qualify at one of the four previous qualifiers held throughout the state of New Jersey. Divisions consisted of Men’s and Women’s RX, Men’s and Women’s Scaled and Men’s and Women’s Executive (40+ and older). During the qualifiers, the WODs and movements consisted of: Deadlifts, Thrusters, Bar-facing Burpees, Bear Complex, Double Unders, Hang Squat Cleans with Dumbbells and Walking Lunges with Dumbbells.
The weather couldn't have been more perfect for an outdoor fitness event on the beach. The setup was great and all spectators had great views of the athletes competing, whether you were in the bleachers watching or just standing around the event field. There were also vendors and sponsors such as Born to Wod, Jack-EE-Boyz Fitness (who supplied all the equipment), LatitudeGearRx, Muscle Milk, New Jersey National Guard, Nutrishop, Reebok CrossFit shoes and apparel, Scion and Strengthlete to name a few. Athletes also had their own section where they could warm up or just relax and work on their tan in between heats.
WOD #1 - Beach Run Anyone?
The first WOD, a 6-minute AMRAP, kicked off with a 250 Meter Run on the beach wearing a weighted vest (#40 for men and #20 for women). Following the run was AMRAP of 25 Air Squats with the weighted vest on and 25 Meters Farmers Walk with #45 plates for men and #25 plates for women. Doing all of that in a weighted vest did not look easy whatsoever!
WOD #2 - Take Your Medicine (Ball)
The second WOD, a 5-minute AMRAP consisted of 10 Kettlebell Snatches each arm (RX weight #60/40, Scaled weight #40/25), 12 Meter Medicine Ball Toss from Seated Position, then carry the ball back to where you started.
The Final WOD - Win Or Go Home
The top 20 in the RX divisions and top 10 in Scaled and Executive then moved onto the Final WOD. This was a 7-minute AMRAP of 10 Medicine Ball Throws (Men #50/Women #25) over a Bar, 12 Meter Sled Drag (#45), 15 Kettlebell Press Each Arm (RX weight #60/40, Scaled weight #40/25) and 12 Meter Sled Drag back. Each new round of the Sled Drag, the athletes had to load another #45 or #25 plate onto their sled. This WOD was a long 7-minutes and looked brutal!
The top 3 in each division were then crowned, a total of $8,000 in prizes were given out and the RX 1st place finishers each went home with $2,000! SportsNet New York (SNY) was on hand to video the competition and will be airing it on Saturday, July 19th at 4pm and Saturday, August 2nd at 8am. Overall, this event was very well organized and ran smoothly. I’m really looking forward to next year’s finals on the beach and maybe as an athlete instead of a spectator!
